Safe Cycling – Langarth
On 11th May the Northern Access Road (NAR) was officially opened. Known as ‘Fordh Langarth’ the 3.5km road runs through the site of the Langarth Garden Village scheme where 3,550 homes are proposed.
The road connects the A390 at the new West Langarth junction west of Threemilestone with Treliske Hospital next to the Health and Wellbeing Innovation Centre. From a cycling point of view the key aspect of this road is the provision of a 3.5m wide segregated 2-way cycle path on its northern side. The cycle path is segregated by a splayed kerb from the pedestrian walkway and from the road by a substantial mainly landscaped verge. Cyclists are given priority over vehicles at side roads. With its future use within a residential environment in mind the road has a 20mph speed limit.
Its winding nature was a deliberate design feature to encourage low speeds. This further prioritises cycle and pedestrian safety.
Cycle racks are positioned next to bus stops to enable people to cycle to get a bus to a further destination.
The early proposals for the NAR in 2019 included just a shared pedestrian and cycle path. Truro Cycling Campaign made the case for segregated provision. What has been delivered is high quality cycling provision and in its extent is the first of its kind in Cornwall.
We encourage you to take a ride on the cycle path perhaps continuing along the Saints Trail to St Agnes.
