Bringing communities together
National Harvest of the Sea

Mousehole fishing harbour, Cornwall
Tonight, Sunday 11 October, Exeter Cathedral hosts Britain’s inaugural National Harvest of the Sea at 6pm – recognising fishermen and women, their families and the communities whose livelihoods depend upon the sea.
Held in partnership with Love British Food and The Fishermen’s Mission, and supported by Seafish, the service brings together fishing communities, seafood businesses, churches and supporters. The Dean of Exeter will lead the service, with the Bishop of Exeter preaching. Queen Camilla has sent a letter of support, although she will not attend in person.
The wider occasion also has support from the Plymouth Fishing & Seafood Association, Fish24 CIC and A Passion for Seafood.
Fishing’s contribution reaches far beyond the boats themselves. According to the Cornish Fish Producers’ Organisation, as reported by ITV News, every fisherman supports 15 jobs on land.
Behind those livelihoods are people: skilled crews, families awaiting their safe return, and communities that know both the rewards and the losses of life at sea. Funds raised tonight will help The Fishermen’s Mission continue its practical, financial and pastoral support for fishermen and their families.
The sea’s beauty and power invite gratitude and humility. Its tides and storms are beyond human command; its gifts should never be taken for granted. It sustains birds, marine creatures and people alike.
Honouring those who work at sea goes hand in hand with protecting its waters and wildlife, reducing waste and making thoughtful food choices. Gratitude finds its fullest expression in care – for the Earth, for those who provide food, and for one another.
May tonight’s gathering bring comfort, recognition and a shared sense of belonging. May those working at sea be blessed with safety, and those living with loss find kindness and support.
Admission is free and everyone is welcome.
